Hero Cop Praises God for Intervening in Deadly Nashville RV Explosion

A metro police officer is praising God for saving his life and helping him to save a fellow officer at the scene of the harrowing Christmas Day explosion of an RV in downtown Nashville.

According to NBC News, Metro Nashville police officer James Wells is one of the six officers lauded as heroes for helping to evacuate people from the area surrounding a suspicious RV. As a result of their bravery, the only casualty of the attack was the bomber himself, identified by police as Anthony Quinn Warner.

Wells and Metro Nashville officer Amanda Topping were both wrapping up their Christmas morning shifts when fellow officer Tyler Luellen called in for backup to a report of shots fired.

The officers then discovered the RV, which Wells reported was blaring Petula Clark’s 1964 hit “Downtown.” A terrifying audio message also emanated from the camper, warning passersby that it was going to blow up in 15 minutes: “If you can hear this message, evacuate now.”

At a press conference on Sunday, Wells explained how he was walking toward the camper when he heard the voice of God.

“This might not be politically correct, but this is my truth,” Wells said as he fought back the tears. “I literally heard God tell me to turn around and go check on Topping, who was by herself down on Broadway.”

At around 6:30 in the morning, as Wells walked away from the camper, the bomb detonated in the vehicle, with the massive blast causing him to stumble and temporarily lose his hearing.

“I just tell myself to stay on your feet, stay alive,” Wells said, stirring with emotion as he relived the terrifying ordeal. “And I just take off in a full-out sprint. And I’m running toward Topping and make sure she’s okay. And we kind of meet in the middle and we just grab each other.”

Topping told the press that the explosion caused “the biggest flames” she had ever seen in her life.

“I don’t know how I kept my footing but…I couldn’t see him for a second, I just lost it and I just took off in a sprint towards him,” Topping added. “And, like he said, I’ve never grabbed somebody so hard in my life.”

Wells described himself as a “spiritual” person, adding God’s hands carried him safely home to his family for Christmas.

“I’m not gonna shy away from that because that’s what saved my life,” Wells said. “And ‘good to see you’ has a completely different meaning for me now.”
